Privacy Policy
Effective
The short version
- Your location history stays on your devices, and in your private iCloud account if you turn on sync. We don't run servers that receive it, and we can't see it.
- We don't show ads, sell data, or track you across other apps or websites.
- A few services are needed for the app to work: Apple for maps, addresses, iCloud, and payments; RevenueCat for subscription status; and geoBoundaries for map outlines. None of them receive your location history from us.
- If you email us, we see what you send.
Who we are
Location Ledger is made by ReleaseTag LLC ("we", "us"). This policy covers the Location Ledger app for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, and this website.
Data the app records
To build your location history, the app records the following on your device:
- Location coordinates and timestamps, captured through Apple's location services
- Addresses for those locations, such as street, city, state, and country
- The name and model of the device that captured each record
- Favorite places you create, including their names, icons, colors, and radius
- A log of changes to the app's location permission
This data is stored in the app's private storage on your device. If you turn on iCloud sync, it is also stored in your private iCloud database through Apple's CloudKit service, which we cannot access. iCloud storage is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Services that process data
Apple
- Address lookup. To turn coordinates into addresses, the app sends them to Apple's MapKit reverse geocoding service.
- iCloud. Besides optional sync, the app stores a randomly generated user ID and your first install date in iCloud key-value storage, so your free trial and subscription work across your devices.
- Siri, Shortcuts, and Spotlight. The names of your favorite places, cities, states, and countries are shared with iOS so Siri and Spotlight can find them. The Spotlight index stays on your device. Siri requests are handled by Apple.
- App Store. Apple processes all purchases. If you choose to share analytics with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple may share crash reports and aggregate usage statistics with us.
RevenueCat
We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions. RevenueCat receives the random user ID generated by the app, your purchase and subscription status from the App Store, and basic device and app information such as operating system, app version, and locale. Like any internet service, it also sees your IP address. RevenueCat does not receive your location history. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
geoBoundaries
To draw state and country outlines on maps, the app downloads public boundary data from geoboundaries.org. Each request includes the code of the country being drawn, such as USA, and your IP address. It does not include your coordinates. Downloaded outlines are cached on your device.
Diagnostics
Starting with version 1.4, the app contains no third-party analytics or crash-reporting software. Earlier versions included a diagnostics SDK from ReleaseTag that could send error data, such as your IP address, device model, operating system version, app configuration, and the time of the error. That data never included your location history.
Notifications
The app may show notifications. They are created on your device and are not sent through our servers.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include. Messages sent with Send Feedback in the app include your random customer ID so we can look up your subscription. If you choose to send logs, they may contain location details. We use this information only to help you, and we'll delete it on request.
This website
This website does not use cookies, analytics, or advertising. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, which may log basic request data such as IP addresses for security. See GitHub's Privacy Statement.
