How Location Ledger Works

Location Ledger uses Apple's low-power location services, so it can run all year without draining your battery.

Significant Location Changes

Instead of constantly polling GPS, Location Ledger uses Apple's significant location change service and visit detection. Your iPhone records a new location when you move a meaningful distance, typically 500 meters or more.

Apple's reverse geocoding then fills in the street, city, state, and country for each record.

Geofencing for Favorites

For the places that matter most, Location Ledger uses geofencing to detect when you arrive and leave.

Days, Overnights, and Time Spent

Measure	What it counts
Days	Each calendar day you were in a location, counting any part of a day. A travel day counts for every state you were in, so totals can exceed the days in the period.
Overnights	Each night assigned to exactly one location, so overnight totals always add up to the number of calendar days.
Time Spent	The total hours and minutes you were in a location.

Example: You drive from New York to Boston on a Tuesday and sleep in Boston. Tuesday counts as one day in New York and one day in Massachusetts, and as one overnight in Massachusetts.

How much does Location Ledger cost?

Location Ledger is free to download and includes a 14-day free trial with full access. After the trial, all features require a Location Ledger Pro subscription, which is $19.99 in the US App Store.

How much battery does Location Ledger use?

Very little. It uses Apple's significant location change service, which piggybacks on location updates iOS already performs, instead of running GPS continuously.

Is my location data private?

Yes. Your records stay on your device, or in your private iCloud account if you turn on sync. Location Ledger has no servers and the developer cannot access your location history.

Can I export my records for my accountant?

Yes. In Settings, tap Export CSV and choose a year. The file includes coordinates, addresses, timestamps, and which device recorded each location.

Can I edit or delete individual records?

No. Records are immutable by design, so your history stays a reliable record. You can delete all data at once from Settings.

Is Location Ledger tax advice?
